Hello! This problem will need to be broken down to find out the unknown.
What you do know is the following:
1) number of total students
2) number of buses
3) number of students NOT on buses = number of students in cars instead
What you do NOT know is the following:
1) the total number of students on the buses
So, to figure out what the equation would look like, indicate the following:
a) use the variable Y = total number of students on the buses
Equation:
1) (Number of buses × Y) + (number of students in cars) = total number of students
2) plug in the numbers for the equation based on what you know
3) figure out how to get Y by itself on just one side of the equation by a) subtracting the number of students in cars to the left side of the equation and the right side of the equation and b) by dividing the number of buses to the left side of the equation and the right side of the equation.
after you have done these steps, look at what remains!
