Liberation Theology is essentially a Marxist Christianity. They focus on social justice, equality, and the oppressed/oppressor dialectic. President Obama went to a church that practiced Black Liberation Theology - which piqued my interest in an ideology that I had previously been aware of.
One could make a strong argument that Pope Francis is a Liberation Theologist, though I doubt you would hear him make the claim. Many of his statements on immigration, climate change, and other social issues align with the political Left that aligns with Liberation Theology whether intentionally or not.
Given that South America is primarily Catholic and follow the dictates of the Pope, I believe it is safe to say that Liberation Theology is practiced, though it may not be "part of the conversation."
