Prime numbers are useful in generating pseudo-random numbers – so that a computer program produces more random results. This is very important in simulations and in statistical analysis.
Did you realize that a cross-cut paper shredder has evenly-spaced blades (both side-by-side and around the circumference of the cylinder) so that it won’t sound like an out-of-balance washing machine? An evenly-spaced arrangement also lessens wear and tear. The problem, however, with this is that every page is cut into the same pattern (I call it the “shredder swath”) – like repeating tire tracks in the mud. This severely limits the number of places that, for example, a chad with a horizontal line near the top could be placed on the page. Prime numbers could help randomize blade position.
