Well, in looking at the research, the worse outcome from the correlation between single mothers and children seems to have casual link through poverty. Simply put income coming from a two parent household is greater then a single parent household. Adding that plus the social stigma of single motherhood pair with women on average making less then a men do equal worse outcomes for the child.
