Probiotics are microorganisms that are supposed to provide some benefit to health. Research into the field is still ongoing and much more is needed for definitive answers. The most common probiotics available today are either in yogurts (Lactobacillus species) and in probiotic capsules (Bifidiobacterium species). The idea is that our body contains its own microbial life (the microbiome) and when species are missing, then disease states can occur. Often probiotic yogurts claim to aid in a healthy gut. Evidence is still needed to support such claims. More information is available from the NCBI website.
