Given that the Vietnam war produced so much counterculture and domestic social backlash, why did the war in Iraq, occurring only about 30 years later, not produce anything similar?

That is a very good question to pose. The era of Vietnam was highlighted by a nation that was divided. The civil rights movement, along with other social movements (communist, hippie movements). America was on the cusp of radical change. Consider that most Americans did not favor the war, and also consider we had just come out of a war. The war in Iraq is different because instead of separating the nation it is arguable that it did the exact opposite. Most Americans stood united after the 9/11 attack. People came together and the logo "united we stand" was nationwide. Citizens wanted someone to answer for the deaths of 2,000 victims. Keep in mind that our nation was attacked. We had never been attacked like this on home soil. It scared Americans.
