Latin phrases - used in French too?

There are lots of latin phrases in common use in English. Is it suitable/appropriate/common to directly use them in French, exactly like I would for English? Yes. As in English, Latin phrases are used in French, as well as in other European languages.

Tangentially, just in case of should absorb this misconception: many modern-day languages contain words whose roots lie in/are derived from Latin words, not vice versa, as another suggests, perhaps via typo.
