If you want to find out how may groupings of a certain size (i.e. packages of 16 ounces each) fit into a total amount, then you need to divide the total by the size of the groupings.
Here you have a total of 144 ounces and a grouping size of 16 ounces.
144 / 16 = 9
... or alternatively...
Realize that 10 * 16 = 160 which is very close to 144.
Then subtract: 160 - 16 = 144
So you took 10 packages of 16 ounces each (160 ounces) and took on package away ( - 16 ounces).
10 - 1 = 9
