About Armin

I have a 25-year background in IT, which has provided me with deep insights in both applied mathematics and sciences as well as experience in explaining new and seemingly complicated subjects to those for whom they are new territories. Having trained varied age groups from teenagers to retirees in anything from the use of smart phones and the Internet at large to programming, I have built a broad knowledge of how to relate information in an understandable fashion.

My education includes completion of the highest tier of the German secondary school system, mastering in mathematics and physics (1986), as well as graduating from the Control Data Institute in Frankfurt/Main with a degree in Computer Science / COBOL Programming (1990).

My recent tutoring experience spans several years, including local freelance work (Craigslist/Backpage; 2010-2016) and work with a local company, specializing in tutoring for high school and college student with learning disabilities (HD Education; 2014-2016).

In these past years I have worked with students ranging in age from 15-26 and tutored subjects ranging from geometry and physics over algebra I and II and trigonometry to calculus. Additionally, I have trained adults in the use of computers (Windows, Mac O/S, IOS, Android), the use of common on-line business tools (Google AdWords, Apps, Webmaster Tools, Analytics) and the use of standard business software (MS Office, QuickBooks).

Prior to this I have spend several years tutoring college students and other adults in German, incl. conversational German, German business writing. I have also freelanced as a translator for German-English and English-German translations of marketing materials and technical manuals.

My tutoring style is different: As a result of my work in IT - programming, designing, infrastructure - I can not only explain the theory of math and science topics, but also show concrete applications of the learned material. I also rely less on memorization than on understanding, showing students to build on their existing knowledge and derive from it - connecting the dots.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Programming

I have worked in IT for over 25 years. I learned to program at age 14 (1980) on a hand-held Sharp computer and have worked with computers ever since.

I have programmed in Basic, VB, VBS, APS, PHP, JavaScript, etc, created web sites, administered networks, and taught others how to use them.

In short, when people say "computer geek", they're talking about me.

Computer Science

In my 25+ years in IT, I have programmed in Basic, VB, VBS, APS, PHP, JavaScript, etc, created web sites, administered networks.

I have taught students and employees how to use computers (PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android) as well as the software running on them, ranging from productivity tool to network analyzers.

I have also taught Basic, JavaSript ans SQL.

German

I am a native German speaker. Having spent the first half of my life in Germany and the time since then in the USA, I have developed the ability to not just teach the language, but also relate the culture and the differences in both.

JavaScript

I have worked in IT for more than 25 years and in web design and development since the 1990s. I started using JavaScript in the late 1990s and have built dozens of websites using JavaScript as an integral part of my user interface design. With the advent of DHTML I have been using jQuery as well as javascript.

Microsoft Access

I have used Microsoft Access since Office 2000 became available.

Over the years I have used it as database for smaller websites, as a platform to create a baggage deliver tracking and billing system and to analyze data from various other sources.

Currently I am operating 5 web sites based on it as well as two application I wrote for local small businesses.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Outlook myself for over 16 years and having installed and maintained/troubleshot it for various colleagues and clients. I am versed in the use of Folders/Rules, Signatures, RSS, archiving strategies, PST repair, etc.

Networking (Computer)

Having worked in IT for over 25 years, I have build and managed networks since the 1990s. From basic home to office networks to VPNs, WiFi WANs (w/ repeaters), and from simple work groups to Active Directory domains. Additionally, I have maintained several computers and networks in data centers for the purpose of hosting websites and services, incl. virtual networking (VMWare) for the last 5 years.

QuickBooks

I have used and trained on QuickBooks since 2002.
I used QuickBooks to run my own bookkeeping.
I have also set up QuickBooks for several other companies. Most recently I set up an Avondale RV rental company with QuickBook on-line.

Web Design

I have been working in IT in general for the last 25 years and in web design and development for the last 18 years.

In the late 1990s, I created the initial web presence for a local Phoenix publishing company, including a dozen of their niche market magazines.

In the early 2000s I worked for a Tempe study abroad company to redesign their site, optimize the work flow and to improve their search engine rankings.

I currently maintain my own servers and a total of just under 100 web sites for clients in AZ, CA and NJ.

Great Teacher !

Armin is a great teacher. Every lesson I have learned something new and have progressed more with older material. He is very knowledgeable and helpful with any questions I have. He also knows a lot about german history as wells as the history of the language which helps a lot with learning it.
