Typically, when dividing sentences into structural types, grammarians will distinguish between simple sentences (sentences with only one independent clause), compound sentences ( sentences with at least two properly connected independent clauses), and complex sentences (sentences with at least one independent clause and one subordinate clause). A fourth, hybrid type, is called a compound-complex sentence consisting of at least two independent clauses and at least one subordinate clause).
