What was barbed wire used for in WWI?

Trench warfare was the common choice of battlefield in World War 1; the war to end all wars so they said.  Barbed wire protected a mass attack on a trench because the attackers would have to stop and cut through the wire or men and horses would get tangled up in it.  In the second World War; another war to end all wars, tanks made barbed wire irrelevent.
