This is a big question! Let's start with grammar. Yes, it is definitely important for your essays, but a few minor mistakes should be acceptable unless you have a professor who is very strict about grammar. As far as the overall essay structure, it sounds like you have worked hard to try to understand it but are still having difficulty. I think the best way to learn is by writing and getting feedback. It's hard to grasp these abstract concepts without actually putting them into practice. Writing a research paper is even more complex- it involves not only the correct essay structure but also incorporation of sources through paraphrasing, quotation, and correct citations. I would suggest more practice in essay writing before attempting a research paper.
