Hi Becca,
Shouldn't the quotation be, "No man is given more hardship than he can endure"?
This sentence is a statement of hope. It assumes there is Someone (God) who is in charge (sovereign) who "gives out" (decides) what happens to each person. Those who say things like this seem to be saying that God allows each person to only have the amount of difficulty in their life that they can survive. They believe God is merciful and keeps the hard things in our lives from becoming too much for us and overwhelming or crushing us.
This statement encourages people to be patient even though they are suffering or struggling. It tries to give people hope that they can outlast their problems.
Some people do not agree with this statement, as they have experienced some very bad things. Other people believe they have endured (lived through really bad things and survived) because God has helped them or has given them extra strength. (This one is me.)
What do you think?
