You can just plug in numbers and graph the corresponding points.
y=1/2x-4
when x=0, y=1/2(0)-4, so y=-4
when x=1, y=1/2(1)-4, so y=-3.5
when x=2, y=1/2(2)-4, so y=-3
when x=4, y=1/2(4)-4, so y=-2
when x=8, y=1/2(8)-4, so y=0
So far we have (0,-4); (1,-3.5); (2,-3); (4, -2); (8,0). Plot these points and connect them with a line extending indefinitely, and you have y=1/2x-4.
