Any number may be multiplied by the Multiplicative Identity (that is, 1) and remain the same (except for units).
It is used in Dimensional Analysis.
Example:
1 = (1 foot) / (12 inches) = (12 inches) / (1 foot) [use the one that allows units to cancel]
Jill is 60 inches tall. How many feet is that?
60 inches
(60 inches) * 1
(60 inches) * ( (1 foot) / (12 inches) )
(60)(1/12) feet
5 feet
60 inches = 5 feet
