4/5x+3/5x+9=-25

Trying to help my 7th grader with this Algebra equation.  Any tips?

Step 1: Simplify both sides of the equation.

7/5x+9=−25

Step 2: Subtract 9 from both sides.

7/5x+9−9=−25−9

7/5x=-34

Step 3: Divide both sides by 7/5.

7/5x7/5=−34/7/5

x=-170/7

First, let's get rid of all those 5ths by multiplying everybody by 5, so:

 

4x + 3x + 45 = -125, or 7x + 45 = -125.

 

Combine your regular numbers by subtracting 45 from each side, so...

 

7x = -170

 

divide by 7, and x = -24 2/7

Hello, Kathleen 

 

Since 4/5 x and 3/5 x have the same denominator, you can easily add them up.  They become 7/5 x 

 

So, this is what we have so far

 

7/5 x +9= -25

           -9    -9        Subtract 9 from both sides

      7/5 x = -34      Multiply both sides by 5/7

5/7 [7/5 x]= (-34)(5/7)

       X=  -170/7Multiplying
