Early European explorers wanted spices from Asia because spies were very valuable at the time. Spices were used to cure, preserve, and improve the taste of meat. Portuguese explorers went around the Cape of Good Hope at the bottom of Africa. Christopher Columbus tried going westward Fromm Europe to get to Asia, it that’s because he thought the globe was much smaller than it really is. Europeans didn’t know about North and South America yet until Columbus encounters them blocking his path to Asia. Eventually, Magellan sailed around South America and eventually to Asia but that showed the world was much bigger and going West to Asia was not practical due to the vast, long, and dangerous trip.
