Inequality: y<3x+2, when is y less than x?

I have to do a math project and I am lost and dont know what to do. I have to figure out when y is less than x and then verify and justify it. He told me something about y=x and we have to include a visual as well.

If y equals 3x + 2, then, for y = x, one can write x = 3x + 2 or

x − 3x = 2 which gives -2x = 2 or x = -1.

Evaluation of y = 3x + 2 at x = -2, x = -1, and x = 0 gives re-

spective y-values of -4, -1, and 2. The ordered pairs from

{(x,y): (-2,-4); (-1,-1); (0,2)} indicate that y < x when x < -1.
