The active site amino acid side chain electrons and protons that normally "prepare" the reactant, than then "attack" the reactant would be stereochemically in the wrong positions to do so. As a result the reactant would either not be "attacked" at all, or "attacked" inefficiently. A less likely scenario is that the enzyme would attack the reactant, and form the "wrong" product.
