how many 1/3's are in 2 2/3

Lisa K.

In 2-2/3, there are 2 whole cakes, plus 2/3 of a cake (a partial cake). So there are not quite 3 cakes. How many 1/3's are in 1 whole cake? 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1 If we have 2 whole cakes, that is 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 =6 pieces of cake But then there is still a partial cake (2/3) 1/3 + 1/3= 2/3 So 2 whole cakes are 6 plus the 2 extra pieces that are not a whole cake yet, so 8. ---------------------------- Mathematically, take the denominator (3) and multiply it by the whole number (2). Then add in the numerator (2). _________________ I made a video to explain this but Wyzant could save/post it. So, sorry if there is a blank answer from me. Cheers! Lisa Klipfel
