Urine is not sterile, as many believe, but contains a few bacteria, mostly those it picks up on its way to the outside of your body from the most distal part of your genitourinary system, namely the urethra. The longer urine sits outside the body, the more bacteria it will have. Bacteria multiply at an exponential rate, doubling every 30 minutes or so. Normally, urine would include bacteria that number less than 100,000, which is the number used to diagnose an infection.

To further Antoine's answer, this is why the medical assistant tells you NOT to collect about the first quarter of urine stream when you give a sample. Your skin and the hairs on your external genitalia are NOT sterile. Once the urine stream gets stronger, the urine sample test will reveal virtually no bacteria.

Well, this might be a trick question. In theory, urine is supposed to be "germ-free" once it leaves the kidneys where it was formed. However, the fluid can pick up bacteria on its way down to your urethra (tube that carries urine outside of your body). So in conclusion, I guess the easy answer your teacher might expect is ZERO, but in reality, it all depends on the location where that urine sample is collected...Makes sense?
