Keira, Larry and Gita picked apples at an orchard. Keira picked twice as many pounds as Larry and three times as many pounds as Gita. The total weight of apples they picked is 8,360 pounds. How many pounds of apples did each person pick?

Let L = the number of pounds Larry picked

Let G = the number of pounds Gita picked

 

Usually verbs are where the = signs go.

 

So I am going to rewrite the sentences...and place the symbols above the words.

 

K         =       2•               L

Keira picked twice as many pounds as Larry.                           so  L  =  K

                                                                                                                       2

 

 

K         =       3•               G

Keira picked three times as many pounds as Gita.                    so   G  =  K

                                                                                                                            3

  

 

        K      +      L      +          G                                  =  8360

The total weight (each person)of the apples they picked is 8360.

 

 

 

Using the equations...Plug into the final equation to find K

 

       K          +   K       +   K     =   8360
