ratio of boys to girls  for soccer = 5: 3

number of boys = 25
number of girls = x

5 : 3 = 25 : x

5/3 = 25/x

do cross multiplication
5x = 75
x = 15

no. of girls = 15
so total  for soccer = 15+25 =40

 

and for track team

no. of girls = 15

no. of boys = y

boys to girls trying out for the track team is 4:5

4:5 = y: 15

 

4/5 =y/15

60 =5y

12 =y

no. of boys for track team = 12

so total for track team = 12+15 =27
