Question

The distance between joes house and school is 9.25 miles and joe goes to school 4 days a week. Estimate the total number of miles joe drives between home and school in one month.

joe drivers 9.25 miles each way. So in one day he goes 18.5 miles. 

 

He drives to school 4 days each week. So in one week he goes 4*18.5 or 74 miles. Ok now comes the estimating. I think the simplest approach is to say there are 4 weeks in a month and Multiply 74 by 4 For 296. 

 

But we know there are also a couple extra days so let’s add 37 miles for the extra days and we get an estimate of 333
