Let's find our two equations. Kids tickets (K) are half the price of adult tickets (A), so K = 1/2A. Seven kids and two adults went to the circus for $49, so 7K + 2A = 49. We want to isolate K in this second equation so we subtract both sides by 2A and get 7K = 49 - 2A. Divide both sides by 7 and we get K = 7 - 2/7A.
Then, we substitute K in the first equation for K in the second equation and get 1/2A = 7 - 2/7A. Adding 2/7A to both sides, we get 11/14A = 7. Divide both sides by 11/14 (i.e. multiply by 14/11), and A = $8.90.
K = 1/2A, so K = 1/2(8.91), or $4.45. The tickets are $4.45 for a children's ticket and $8.90 for an adult ticket.
