when you buy a 27 inch television set, the 27 inches refers to the diagonal measurement of the screen. If a 27 inch TV has a square screen which value is closest to the length of any side?

729 = 2S^2

S^2 = 729/2 = 364.5

S = square root of 364.5

S = 19.1 inches for each side

distance formula is

d^2 = sum of squares of each side = S^2 + S^2 = 2S^2

d = sqr(2S^2)

27 = 19.1(1.414) =27
