Set up a table like this:
State Obesity % Deviation Deviation^2
AL 3%
AR 2%
AK 1%
etc
...

(1) Find the TOTAL of the percents
(2) MEAN = total / 50 <--- average obesity rate is the total divided by 50 states
(3) complete the DEVIATION column by subtracting each obesity rate - MEAN
that is, the formula for DEVIATION = statistic - mean
(4) complete the 4th column by squaring each deviation
(5) TOTAL the columns
Variance = total of deviations^2 / 49 <--- yes, you divide by N-1, or 49
Standard deviation = square root of Variance
