A computer output giving descriptive statistics for the percent of the population that is obese for each states, from the USStates dataset, is given in the table shown below. What the mean and standard deviation?

Set up a table like this:

  TOTALS

 

 (1) Find the TOTAL of the percents

 (2) MEAN = total / 50  <--- average obesity rate is the total divided by 50 states

 

 (3) complete the DEVIATION column by subtracting each obesity rate - MEAN

           that is, the formula for DEVIATION = statistic - mean

 

 (4)  complete the 4th column by squaring each deviation

 

 (5) TOTAL the columns

 

Variance = total of deviations^2 / 49   <--- yes, you divide by N-1, or 49

 

Standard deviation = square root of Variance
