You need to state the context of the question. For example, is this a chemistry question where k is the equilibrium constant? Is this a thermodynamics question where k is the Boltzmann constant? Is this a mechanics question where k is the spring stiffness? Is this a wave motion question where k is the wave number?  It is hard to get an answer if you do not state what the question is about.

k, or sometime K, is the traditional symbol used to indicate a constant.  I'm guessing here, but, it could be that k (kappa) is the first letter in the Greek word for constant.
