Question

machine produces open boxes using square sheets of metal. The machine cuts equal-sized squares measuring 4 inches on a side from the corners and then shapes the metal into an open box by turning up the sides. If each box must have a volume of 400 cubic inches, find the length and width of the open box.
A large square has a small square cut out of each corner. Each small square measures 4 inches on each side. The distance from one cut out square to another cut out square along both the length and the width of the resulting figure is labeled x.

The length and width of the open box are both
nothing inches.

The length and the width of the open box are both x inches

The height is 4 inches

Volume is  LWH = 400

 

x(x)(4) = 400

4x² = 400

x² = 100

x = 10 inches

 

The length and width of the open boxes are 10 inches and the height is 4 inches

 

Note:  The original square pieces of metal from which the boxes are cut are

18 by 18 inches
