Gretchen has x square inches of fabric to decorate her pillows. If she uses 6 square inches on each pillow, she will have 10 square inches of fabric remaining. But if she uses 8 square inches on each pillow, she will need an additional 18 square inches to decorate all of her pillows. How many pillows does she plan to decorate?

8N  - 18 = x

 

Subtracting Equation 2 MINUS Equation 1:

 

8N - 18 - (6n + 10) = x - x 

 

8N - 18 - 6n - 10 = 0

 

2n - 28 = 0

 

2n = 28

 

n = 14

 

She has 14 pillows.

 

6 x 14 + 10 = 84 + 1- = 94 square inches 

 

8 x 14 - 18 = 112 - 18  = 94 square inches
