Math, microeconomics or criminal justice
It's the distinction between normative and positive economics. The first deals with equity, justice, social values and ethics.
The latter concerns efficient allocation of resources, minimizing costs for a given objective or preference. It's objective social science and mathematics. It's "amoral," without regard for issues of fairness.
The two approaches really cannot be so neatly separated, but it is similar to journalism where you put the news on the front page and to restrict the opinion and commentary to the editorial page.
