I am assuming that this student spent a total of 11 hours studying math at home. Assuming this, the average would be calculated by simple division.

 

11 divided by 5 = 2 1/5 hours per day or 2.2 hours per day or 2 hours and 12 minutes per day. (all the same)

All you have to do is divide 11 divided by 5.  The answer is 2.2 as a decimal or 2 1/5 as a fraction. 

 

Let's do it as a fraction

11/1 divided by 5/1

11/1 times 1/5           When you divided fractions you change the 

                                 the sign to a multiplication and you 'flip'

                                 the second fraction upside down.

 

11/ 5                         Multiply the numerators 11*1 and multiply

                                 the denominators 1*5

11/5 is an improper fraction.  It becomes 2 1/5.
