Working out percentages

Question

If a cars legal weight is 3500kg.  Although is found to weigh 5580kg.  How do you work out what percentage (%) the car is overweight?

First calculate how much is the car overweight by subtracting the mass of the overweight car from the legal mass. Then divide this mass by the legal weight and multiply it by 100% to get the percentage. 

 

We can write a formula as:

 

(overweight - legal weight) / legal weight x 100%

 

(5580 - 3500) / 3500 x 100% = 59.43% ~ round to 59% to the correct # of significant digits.
