Algebra 1 word problem

Question

Emily rows 6 miles downstream and in 1 hour. Her fiend Ashley, who is rowing 1 mph faster completes the trip in 2 hours. 

 

1) Find the speed each girl is rowing at. 

 

2) if Emily and Ashley were rowing separately, who would complete their trip first and by how long?

distance = rate x time

 

6 miles = r x 1 hour

 

rate r = 6mph

Emily's speed is 6 mph.

 

Ashley's speed is 7 mph.

Ashley travels 14 miles in 2 hours.

 

Emily will need 14/6 = 7/3 = 2 and 1/3 hours = 2 hours and 20 minutes

to complete the same 14 miles.

 

So Emily will finish 20 minutes sooner
