Suppose the average yearly salary of an individual whose final degree is a master's is $44 thousand less than twice that of an individual whose final degree is a bachelor's. Combined, two people with each of these educational attainments earn $115 thousand. Find the average yearly salary of an individual with each of these final degrees.

i ASSUME that you are dealing with two people, one of whom has a Bachelors (only) degree, and the other who has a Master's degree.  This is not the same as "two people with each of these" attainments.

 

BA: 2m-44, in thousands of dollars

MA: m thousands of dollars

 

Therefore 3m-44 = 115 and you can solve for m.
