Thomas gave a good answer.  I just want to add some clarification on the difference between a democracy and a republic, with 2 examples.  In some ancient Greek city-states, the people gathered regularly in large assembles and voted on everything.  That was a democracy. In early ancient Rome, the people elected officials to serve in government, end empowered the elected officials to make decisions.  That was a republic.

Do you mean the definition? The idea is simple: in a democracy, every citizen rules directly, whereas in a republic the citizens choose people to speak for them, with the understanding that the elected will make their own choices -- but are assumed to speak with reasonable accuracy for those who elected them. In other words, if you hate war then your representatives will not be pro-war. If you favor high taxes, they won't be against taxes. The specifics are up to them (how high for the taxes, or what does it take to enter a war anyway).
