Question

At the movie theatre, child admission is $6.40
and adult admission is $9.70
. On Saturday, four times as many adult tickets as child tickets were sold, for a total sales of $1627.20
. How many child tickets were sold that day?

Let's say x child tickets were sold that day. So four times adults tickets were sold, which is 4x. So, Total tickets sold is x+4x =5x. 

 

Now, one child ticket cost $6.40 so, x tickets cost $6.40x

and one adult ticket costs $9.70, so 4x adult tickets cost $9.70 x 4x = $38.80x

 

Total sale is $6.40x + $38.80x = $ 45.20x

 

It's given that total sale is $1627.20. So, 45.20x = 1627.20 or x= 1627.20/45.2 = 36

 

Therefore, 36 child tickets were sold that day!! :)
