In a very basic sense, the heart is divided into four chambers: the right and left atria, and the right and left ventricles. The blood that is pumped into the heart ‘waits’ in the atrium until the corresponding valves open, which then allows the blood to move into the ventricle, which pumps blood out of the heart. The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body, and the right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs to be oxygenated.
Additionally, there are valves (tricuspid, bicuspid, mitral, etc.) between the ventricles and the atria, as well as in the opening that blood is pushed out of the ventricles.
The function of the heart is to circulate blood around the body, which with it blood carries not only oxygen, but also many, many other important nutrients and vitamins.
