how did japan location both separate it from and tie it to china and korea

i ask this qestion because it is relly difficalt for me and if you help me it will be nice

The answer has to do with the fact that Japan is a bunch of islands. It is protected from invasion, but is close to countries that it actually invaded before World War II. That would be Korea and China. Both are on the mainland of Asia. Japan had a strong army. China was weak and Korea was outnumbered.
