During the G1 stage the cell performs its normal functions and grows, pretty much doubling the number of organelles and its size. During the S stage its DNA replicates. During the G2 stage it makes any last minute repairs in preparation for cell division. During the M stage it separates the sister chromatids (mitosis) and divides.
