Solve it please...

If I am reading the problem correctly it should say:
If 1/3 of a number exceeds 2/7 by 1, find the number.
If not, then please fix the post since the question is not clear...
It may mean to say: If 1/3 of a number exceeds 2/7 of itself by 1 ....

1/3 of a number: (1/3)x
exceeds 2/7 by 1: = 1 2/7

The equation is (1/3)x = 1 2/7

Turn the mixed number into an improper fraction

(1/3)x = 9/7

Multiply both sides by 3

x = (9/7)(3)

x = 27/7

x = 3 6/7
