Beverly,
To begin, you need to create a plan for finding how many calories are in 1/2 of a cup. 2/3 is greater than one half, but you can use your knowledge of 2/3 cup to help you solve this problem.
My first question is, "What denominator will help me identify how many calories are in 1/2 c?"
I know that even denominators can easily be divided into halves (e.g. 1/2, 2/4, 3/6, 4/8, 5/10, etc.)
Now that I know what fractions are equal to a half, I want to find a denominator that will be compatible with 2/3. I know that if I partition each of my thirds into two parts, I will have two times as many parts. 2/3 x 2/2 = 4/6. This can be demonstrated concretely with food (e.g. graham crackers), pictorially with a visual representation, or abstractly with the equation (2/3 x 1 = 2/3...so...2/3 x 2/2 = 4/6...4/6 is the same as 2/3).
Now that I know that 4/6 is equal to 2/3, I have to ask, "How many sixths equal a half?" or "What is half of 6 total parts?"
The answer is 3. You can then use your knowledge of 4/6 cups equaling 160 calories to help you determine how many calories 3/6 cups equals.
Hint: How can you share divide (or share) the 160 calories amongst each of the sixths in 4/6? How many calories would then be in only three-sixths?
Let me know if you need additional help with fractions.
