So 1/2 ft = 0.5 ft must be added to all sides

 

Therefore, the AUGMENTED quilt WITH the border is 9 ft long and 6 feet wide.

 

The area of the augmented quilt is 9x6 = 54.

 

The area of the original quilt WITHOUT the border is 8 x 5 = 40

 

So the area of the border is 54 - 40 = 14
