Question

Jerry deliveres Times magazine to one neighborhood, and Star to another. He delivers two Times papers in one minute, but only delivers one Star in one minute. If he delivers a total of 91 papers and takes exactly one hour to deliver them, how many of each type of paper does he deliver?

T is the number of Times magazines and S is the number of Star magazines. 

 

T +S =91            The total delivered.

T/2 +S = 60        It takes half the time to deliver Times as it did the Star in a total of 60 min = 1 hr

 

T +S =91
T + 2S = 120       (multiply both sides by 60)

 

S =29                Use linear combination. Solve.

T  = 91 - 29

T = 62

 

62 Times and 29 Star magazines.
