each helmet costs $23.85

x=number of groups of 8 baseballs as well as the number of groups of 3 helmets

8x($2.39)+3x($23.85)=$400

90.67x=400

x=400/90.67

x=4.4116

4*8=32 baseballs and 4*3=12 helmets

He can buy 32 baseballs and 12 helmets for a cost of 32*$2.39+12*$23.85=$76.48+$286.20=$362.68 with $37.32 left over.
