A playground has the shape of s triangle. The sides of a playground are expressed as 2x, x - 3, and x + 23, and the perimeter of the playground is 100 feet. What is the measurement of each side of the playground in feet? This question has been really hard. Help please!

The sides of the triangle are summed to equal the perimeter of 100 ft.

 

Let x = unknown length (ft)

 

side1 length = 2*x

 

side2 length = x - 3

 

side3 length = x + 23

 

Therefore,   

 

side1 length + side2 length + side3 length = 100 ft

 

2*x + (x - 3) + (x + 23) = 100     (combine like terms and solve for x)

 

4*x + 20 = 100

 

4*x = 100 -20 = 80

 

x = 80/4 = 20 ft

 

Therefore, the three sides of the triangle are equal to as follows below:

 

side1 = 2*x = 2*20 = 40 ft

 

side2 = x - 3 = 20 - 3  = 17 ft

 

side3 = x + 23 = 20 + 23 = 43 ft

 

checking to see if they all add up to 100 ft:

 

40 ft + 17 ft + 43 ft = 40 ft + 60 ft = 100 ft   looks good
