How do I answer this without logarithms?

A fat cat that was initially 12kg reduces its weight by 10% each month. How long does it take for the cat to be at least 6kg lighter than its original weight? Give your answer as a whole number of months.

Check the answer:

We start at 24 kg
1 months:  24(.9) = 21.6kg
2 months:  21.6(.9) = 19.44 kg
3 months:  19.44(.9) = 17.496 kg

The answer checks since the first whole number of months at which the
weight is less than 18 kg is 3 months.
