During a sale at the local department store, you can buy three sweatshirts and two pairs of sweatpants for $85.50. Later you return to the same store and buy three more sweatshirts and four more pairs of sweatpants for $123. What is the sale price of each sweatshirt and each pair of sweatpants?

3S+2P=85.50

3S+4P=123

Since you are buying the same number of shirts, the difference in price is the 2 pairs of pants.

 

123 - 85.5 = 37.5

 

37.5/2 = 18.75

 

Each pair of pants is $18.50.

 

85.5 - 37.5 = 48

 

48/3 = 16

 

Each shirt is $16.
