creditable - adj., (of a performance, effort, or action) deserving public acknowledgment and praise but not necessarily outstanding or successful
So I guess in your context, this person had later pieced together a story that was more credible (as in more believable); if less creditable (as in less able to give someone credit with).
EDIT: yeah I guess that's kind of an English faux pas for me to use the root word when explaining its meaning. What I mean to say is "if less creditable (as in less recognized, or less commendable).

That may be true Mark, I'm not good at linguistics. However I do know that some authors like to play around with language and make up their own meaning to things even when it's not technically correct.
