What does the phrase "less creditable" mean?

In the context "It was only later that I pieced together a portrait that was more credible; if less creditable."

The root is "credo," Latin for "I believe."
Therefore anything believable is creditable.

That may be true Mark, I'm not good at linguistics. However I do know that some authors like to play around with language and make up their own meaning to things even when it's not technically correct.
