Hi Nakesha from Campbell, OH. Have a great day at school.
Great! A fraction addition problem. Every student's favorite! NOT!
Glad you contacted Wyzant. I'll help you understand how to set up and solve these kind of problems. Giving you the answer is too easy, you don't learn how to solve them yourself. When you learn how, you will be a pro.
Let's start: here is your equation:
5/6 + 3/4 = ? With these kind of problems, you will notice
the denominators are not the same. When
it comes to adding and subtracting fractions
you know the denominators have to be the
same! RIGHT?? So, we need to do some
thing to change the fractions so that they
can look the same, BUT NOT change their
value. So HOW do we do that??
Here we go: the bottom numbers, the denominators have to be changes, but there is a specific method to change them.
5 + 3 = ? We need to change the 6 and the 4 to a number
6 4 they have in common, the LCD. What do you
think that is? What is a number each can be
divided into. They are both even AND they can
go into 12, RIGHT? So we do this:
2 • 5 + 3 • 3 = This changes your equation to
2 • 6 3 • 4
10 + 9 = Notice how we not have the denominators the
12 12 same. Since they are the same you can now add
10 + 9 = Rewrite the equation and complete the operation
12 Then you can reduce to a mixed fraction
Now finish up the problem. Practice and you will get better.
